A Roof Over Our Heads

Yesterday was a special day for me - I picked up a piece of folk art that I have been wanting for a long time, and got a special bonus to go with it. Scott and I went to the Laurel Gorge Cultural Heritage Center's Fall Craft and Vendor Fair. I've been wanting to get a piece by Minnie Adkins so I finally grabbed it and as I was checking out, I mentioned that I had been wanting something of hers for a long time. The woman said, "Well, you know she's here, right? Come on, I'll introduce you!" And the next thing I knew I was standing before this little sprite of an 85-year-old woman. The very first thing she did was place her hand on my arm and say to me "Child, where did you grow up?" My world instantly spun back about 45 years to the churches and fellowship halls of my childhood. I haven't been referred to as "child" since those long ago days when I'd be heading from Sunday School to church and old Mrs. So-and-So would stop me in the hallway and place her hand on my arm and ask "Child, where is your grandmother?" or "Child, how is your Mama doing?" Mrs. Adkins was a delight and offered me an invitation to their monthly "art meetings" at her church and we went from strangers to friends in a few short minutes. I absolutely love small town life.

And finally....drumroll please......we have roof!! After a long wait for trusses, they are finally up and the roof is mostly done.

Everyone keeps telling me, "Once the roof is on, construction really takes off!" Y'all had all better be telling the truth about that because this snail's pace we're going at now is a bit frustrating.

View from the back yard

It's kind of impressive from this angle!

Future cathedral ceiling. This is looking toward the back of the house and this is the great room. The upper part of that wall will also be windows, they just haven't been framed yet.

Progress!!!
